Illustration Friday:Worry & Baby,Healing Sketch#16

(Click on image for a closer view)

Text reads:
Gatsby is a cool (and worrisome) baby.
He wears a derby over a busby and enjoys a daily game of rugby.

( Derby: Also called bowler. A stiff felt hat with rounded crown and narrow brim; Busby: A full-dress fur hat of varying shape, worn by hussars in the 19th century and by the foot guard regiments of the British army; Rugby: A form of football played with an oval ball.)

I may have over-thought the rhyme with this one. And I think there's a lot more happening in it as compared to the previous illustrations in this style.
But I had fun doing it and figured I ought to post it before I tinkered with it any more!

I've been wondering about this style lately.
While its a lot of fun to work with, I wonder if it would work when adapted to say something like a children's book.
Also, is it something that could be enjoyed as a print that could be framed and hung?
Or is it limited by all the text?

What do you think?

(Any feedback would be much appreciated, as always!)

:)

Cheers,
Radha

PS: Here's another sketch I did a few days back, based on the topic of baby.

I like the collage textures in the background and the lights gray lines. I think those two factors set it apart from looking mass market and brings your style more into the realm of trade picture books. I also like the font you used. I think it could easily be framed and hung. If you want to get into the trade picture book industry, then I would suggest illustrating some scenes with action and using the same character in more than one illustration to show consistency. Very nice work!

these collage like illustrations are wonderful. I think the layout would be great for children books + I agree with Kristi in the idea of trying to illustrate some scenes with action.

Well as for me, am captivated by the hats. Would love to see a book with babies in all kinds of hats. Sort of a nonsense book with each page independent. It would be a fun book for children and also a book many hat enthusiasts would enjoy. A great coffee table piece.

I don't know much about what style would work as a children's book, but this style is wonderful and very original. If not children's books, then certainly spots, or perhaps editorial. But I personally can see this style as a book. Especially the characters themselves. I love them to pieces!

Also, Kristi has some very sound advice about showing action and character consistency.

Keep up the good work!! You're kicking butt.
